The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University

Guided by strategic goals to serve our learners, The Warren Alpert Medical School’s innovative curriculum integrates foundational knowledge and clinical skills to produce compassionate and highly skilled physicians.

Our approach to medical education is predicated on the vision that tomorrow's physician must be a lifelong learner with a growth mindset, who is scientifically and clinically enlightened, patient- and service-centered, and who understands the economic underpinnings of the US healthcare system. Our goal is to train physicians who provide informed and compassionate care while simultaneously serving as leaders (at all levels) and change agents for the healthcare system.

Curriculum

Officially launched in 1996 for the graduating MD Class of 2000, The Warren Alpert Medical School continues to employ a competency-based curriculum intended to define the outcomes of the educational process: what are the desirable qualities of a medical school graduate, and what constitutes the essential knowledge base that will enable a graduate to make a successful transition to their chosen medical field?

To this end, these educational goals are pursued through a structured curriculum while allowing students freedom to explore interests and specialty topics:

  • Pre-clerkship phase (Years 1 and 2): students enroll in Integrated Medical Sciences (IMS-I through -IV) for foundations of medicine and Doctoring-I through -IV to gain physician skills training.
    • Pre-clerkship Electives allow students to explore different topics, skills, and opportunities.
    • Scholarly Concentration Program (optional) begins in the pre-clerkship phase and allows deeper exploration into a self-chosen research topic.
  • Clerkship Phase (Year 3): students explore core disciplines and related specialties through the required clerkships in internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, psychiatry, and family medicine.
  • Post-clerkship Phase (Year 4): curriculum consists of a required sub-internship and student-selected electives, aiming to finalize career choice before residency.
