Pre-Registration for Spring 2020
Notice to Students Regarding Online Pre-Registration for Spring 2020
Dates
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR SPRING IS MANDATORY
Pre-registration is mandatory for all students, graduate and undergraduate, unless you are an undergraduate studying abroad in the spring semester. Prior to pre-registration, students should check Banner to see if they have financial or other holds that would block them from registering.
Students will be prevented from pre-registering for Spring 2020 classes if they owe a student account balance of $1,000 or more, or they have failed to provide their social security number as requested. The Bursar Office has sent out detailed information regarding these holds. Please contact bursar@brown.edu for additional information.
Pre-registration for the spring 2020 term will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5th*. Initial access to the registration system will be staggered as follows:
Graduate students: Tuesday, November 5 8 a.m.
Undergraduates whose semester level in Spring '20 will be:
07 and above Tuesday, November 5 8 a.m.
05 and 06 Wednesday, November 6 8 a.m.
03 and 04 Thursday, November 7 8 a.m.
Everyone else Friday, November 8 8 a.m.
*all days and times are Eastern Time
Once registration opens for your cohort, you may add or drop courses and change grade options at any time until registration is turned off at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12th.
End of Pre-Registration
At 5 p.m., Tuesday, November 12th, online pre-registration for the spring will be closed. After that, no changes to your spring schedule can be made until Wednesday, January 22nd.
Students who fail to pre-register by the November 12th deadline will have a $15 failure to pre-register fee automatically charged to their student account.
Incoming Transfer Students
Please note incoming transfer students starting in spring 2020 will not pre-register in November but will pre-register separately before the start of the spring term.
Registration Restrictions and Instructor Overrides
Courses with restrictions (pre-reqs, semester level, etc.) will allow enrollment only to students who meet the restriction parameters. Courses with limited enrollment will allow registrations only until that limit has been reached. Students may not register for multiple courses meeting at the same time.
If you wish to register for a course for which instructor permission is required or for which there is a registration restriction, you will not be permitted to do so unless and until the instructor has approved an override. If you need to request an override, you can make the request directly through Courses@Brown when you add the course to your cart. Be aware that an approved override does not itself register you for the course, however, you will be able to register after the override has been approved.
Please Note: The University considers it a violation of its policy concerning the acceptable use of technical resources to create or utilize an automated solution to attempt to register for courses in Banner. The use of such automated tools gives the user an unfair advantage over other students and increases the possibility of system degradation or failure. Students who are found to have used such an application will lose their ability to register online for the rest of the semester in question.
Need Help?
If you have a registration or course related question, contact the Banner Registration Hotline at 401-863 -2300 or registrar@brown.edu. For technical questions, contact the CIS Help Desk at 401-863-4357 or help@brown.edu. Assistance will be available to students between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Additional Information
Advising PINs: Students (excluding transfer students) currently in their first, second, or third semester will need to obtain an Advising PIN from their advisors in order to pre-register. This PIN will be different from the PIN used for the fall or spring 2019 term.
Chemistry Placement Exam: Students who wish to take CHEM 0330 during the spring 2020 term must successfully complete the Chemistry Placement Exam. If you already have passed CHEM 0100 and/or have a recorded Chemistry AP score of 4/5, you do not need to take the exam and can simply register for CHEM 0330. The placement exam will be available through 5 p.m., Tuesday, November 12th.
Concentration Filing Deadline: No student may pre-register for his or her fifth semester unless a declaration of concentration has been approved by the concentration advisor in ASK. Students were urged to submit their declarations in ASK by October 8th to give concentration advisors enough time to review and approve the concentration without putting you at risk of not being able to pre-register. Remember, simply starting the declaration process in ASK is NOT enough! All declarations must obtain advisor approval prior to Thursday, October 31st at 5 p.m. Transfer students entering in their fifth semester are given an additional semester to declare. Brown/RISD Dual Degree students are allowed two extra semesters to submit their declarations.
Advising PINs: Students (excluding transfer students) currently in their first, second, or third semester will need to obtain an Advising PIN from their advisors in order to pre-register. This PIN will be different from the PIN used for the fall or spring 2019 term.

The placement exam will be available through 5 p.m., Tuesday, November 12th.
Deadline for Declaring Additional Concentrations: Any student that is currently in their 7th Semester, have until Thursday, December 12th at 5 p.m., to have your second (or third) concentration declaration submitted and approved by the concentration advisor. Submitting your concentration for department approval by that deadline is not sufficient: You must see that declaration through to final departmental approval by December 12th at 5 p.m. for it to be accepted.
As prescribed by Faculty Rules and Regulations, should the ASK (Advising SideKick) system accept your declaration after December 12th, the Office of the Registrar cannot accept that declaration once the deadline has passed. Failure to plan and act according to these deadlines, regardless of whether ASK allows it, is not deemed a valid rationale for an exception to the deadline.

All students are required to pre-register. If you are a doctoral student who has completed coursework, you are still required to pre-register (usually either for research or thesis/dissertation preparation).
